Things to do
There's plenty to keep everyone busy — on the water, around the park, and out on the tracks. Most of it is free for guests; a few bits and pieces are available from the office during office hours.
Free kayaks are available for the kids on the beachfront, and life jackets must be worn — they're provided with the kayaks. The kayaks are unlocked 2 hours before high tide and locked up again 2 hours after high tide. Paddle boards are available from the office during office hours with a bond, refunded when the gear is returned in the same condition.
Free for anyone staying in the park, located in front of the office. Please, only one at a time for safety.
There's a concrete table by the BBQ area. Good bats (bond required) and balls at $1 each are available from the office during office hours.
Sets are available from the office during office hours — please return them after use.
There are two playgrounds to enjoy:
Open during summer at specified screening times, to be advised.
A list is available from the office during office hours, and they're free to borrow.
Free for campers while staying, or leave-one-take-one. Located at the end of the movie hall, open 9am–6pm.
The giant art trail is behind the park, on the track leading to the walking track. There are 6 pieces to find — the first to the left of the black tanks, and the last just after you enter the bush track.
Take the road up the hill and it will lead you to the 200-year-old pōhutukawa tree — walk in under it. Back-track to the mown grassed area and follow the track through native bush. Tracks lead off the main track up to Brick Bay, but they're steeper; keeping to the main track brings you out at a lovely grassed area where you walk back along the beach. Best done when the tide is out.
For those who'd rather skip the hills: go out the camp entrance, cross the road, then walk towards the boat club until you see the boardwalk. Follow it down to the main wharf — or round to Snells Beach at low tide. Takes about an hour one way.
There are 3 washers and 2 dryers in the laundry block — $2 for a wash and $2 for a dry. Washing powder and coins are available during office hours at the office. Cold wash only.
